Project description
Aim:
Provide crop farmers with disease and pest development forecasts, using a decision support system to determine the exact timing of spraying of plant protection products.
The project uses the RIMpro decision support system for the forecasting of three widespread harmful organisms: apple scab, fruit tree canker and apple codling moth, and currently tests the pattern of RIMpro apple sawfly forecasts. A network of meteorological stations is maintained as part of the project, as well as free audience access to forecasts of harmful organisms.
The tasks of project:
- To provide and maintain a forecast of the development of the harmful organisms in apple orchards using a decision support system and to make information on critical risk periods for harmful organisms freely available on a website
- To monitor the development and spread of the harmful organisms in apple orchards where weather stations have been installed and to determine the effectiveness of the plant protection strategy
- To develop and test in a field trial different plant protection strategies in line with the predictions of the decision support system, including preparations authorised for organic production
- To validate new forecast models under Latvian conditions
